Yesterday, Mr. Basescu met with President George W. Bush. The heads of state held a joint Oval Office press conference. During the session, President Basescu spoke of the need to eliminate visa restrictions for Romanians entering the United States. “The problem we have now … is in connection with our students, which are more and more present in American universities, with our intelligent people which are working in IBM or in Oracle.” President Basescu expressed his opinion that, unlike other ethnic groups at the center of the current immigration debate, Romanians “don’t look at the United States as a place to immigrate illegally.” He looked with optimism toward continued strengthening of business ties between the two global commerce partners.
Ms. Moldovan is a former Romanian judge. Prior to her emigration to the United States, she served on the Commission for Granting the Status of Anti-Communist Fighters. She holds a Master of Laws degree from the Fordham University School of Law.
